Elite Barrows

Elite Barrows

Regular Barrows never made you dig. The brothers stand on top of the mounds, you fight them in the open, and the tombs underneath are sealed shut. Elite Barrows is the old way — six mounds, a spade, and whatever is waiting underneath. The whole run is now built; this is what it does, and what is still missing.

The run has been played end to end — digging in, the brothers, the gates, being thrown between chambers and the pull to the chest all behave.

Take the client update. The unlock progress on the teleport panel is drawn client side, and the new models arrive with it.

Earning your way in

500 kills of each Barrows brother. All six, individually — 500 Ahrim, 500 Dharok, and so on down the list. Until then the elite hill is closed to you.
New
  • The teleport won't take you. Elite Barrows sits in the minigames list right under normal Barrows, but picking it while you're short just turns you back.
  • Neither will the spade. If you get to the mounds some other way, digging on one gives you the same answer.
  • It's your lifetime count, the same one the chat message quotes after every brother you kill. Nothing resets it — looting a normal Barrows chest doesn't touch it.

Your progress sits on the teleport

Click Elite Barrows in the minigames list and the panel shows all six brothers against the 500 — red while you're short, green once a brother is done. It re-reads your kills every time you select it.

You have to dig

New
  • Take a spade. There is no door, no ladder and no staircase on the surface — the mounds are solid. Standing on one and digging is the only way down.
  • Six mounds, six ways in. They sit in the ring you'd know from Barrows, with a sixth in the middle. Each one drops you into a different chamber.
  • You don't have to be precise. Get near a mound and dig.
  • The crypt is dark. You won't see much coming.
  • Nothing waits for you on the surface. The mound field is empty — every brother is underground.

The crypt is yours alone

Every dig opens your own private copy of the crypt. Nobody else is down there, nobody else's kills open your gates, and nobody can beat you to the chest.
New
  • Your run is your run. Two players digging at the same time get two separate crypts.
  • Leaving ends it. Climb out and the run is over — the brothers reset and the gates close behind you. There is no returning to a half-finished crypt.

The brothers, doubled and shuffled

The brothers down here are not the ones on the hill.

You don't know who is in the next room. Chamber occupants are randomised. Dharok's mound does not mean Dharok's crypt — the brother waiting for you is rolled fresh, the same brother can hold two chambers at once, and the one you just killed can be standing in the next room. There is no "one of each" to tick off, and no safe assumption about which style you'll need next.

Bring Barrows (I) or better. This is not the gear check the hills are — a full run is 1,200 to 2,400 health of brothers, depending how many the crypt asks of you.

They hit hard, but they will not delete you. Max hits run 57 to 80, with Dharok at the top. Tripling his would have made him the hardest-hitting thing in the game by a distance — and you fight these alone, with nobody to pick you back up — so the top of the range is capped.

Kill a brother, and the crypt drags you on

New
  • A chamber's gates grind open the moment its brother falls. No stairs, no climbing out — you work sideways through the crypt.
  • A cleared chamber stays cleared. Its gates never shut again.
  • The brothers come back. About 30 seconds after one falls, another takes his place in that chamber — and it may not be the same brother. The way through stays open; it's the room that refills.
  • You don't get to pick your next fight. Kill a brother and the crypt throws you into a different chamber, preferring one that already has someone standing in it.
In the chat box
Dharok falls.
The gates grind open, and another brother drags you in to fight!

Why you're moved rather than left to walk. Brothers return to the chamber they died in, so standing between two doorways and killing back and forth was the fastest way through — and the other four chambers may as well not have been there. Being thrown across the crypt means the whole place gets used, and you never know which room you are about to be standing in.

You can land in a chamber nobody has cleared yet, gates still shut and a brother already swinging. That room is yours to finish before you leave it.

The crypt is nine chambers in a three-by-three grid. Six are reached by the mounds, two are junctions you pass through, and the middle one holds the chest.

Six chambers, six randomised brothers. The two junctions open from either neighbour, so you are never walled in.

Finding the way to the chest

The chest sits in the middle of the crypt, and it is the one chamber you cannot walk into. Every gate around it stays sealed for the whole run.
New
  • The crypt lets you in when it's had enough. After a certain number of brothers, the ground opens and drops you into the middle.
  • That number is different every run. It's rolled the moment you dig in, it's somewhere between four and eight, and you are never told what it is. Every kill might be the one.
  • This is why the brothers come back. A run that wants eight needs more than the six chambers hold at once, so you go back through and take whoever has returned.

Looting the chest ends the run and puts you back on the surface at the mound you dug. The middle chamber has no way out on foot, by design.

The Crypt key

Any brother can drop a Crypt key. Click it and it takes you straight to the chest, however many kills you're on.
New
  • 1 in 18 from every brother, in every chamber.
  • No drop rate bonus touches it. Donator rank, Ring of Fortune, perks — none of it moves this one. It is 1 in 18 for everybody, always.
  • It works anywhere. Click one at home, in your bank, standing in the wilderness — the crypt opens around you and you are standing at the chest. You do not have to dig in first.
  • You still need the 500 kills. Keys can be traded, and a key is not a way around the entry requirement. If you have not earned your way in, the key stays in your bag.
  • They stack, and they trade. A run's worth is one bank slot, and you can sell them.
  • It's a shortcut, not a jackpot. A key used cold means no kills behind you, and the chest pays on how far you got — so it is the worst odds on a piece, not the best. Fastest way in, thinnest reward.

What the chest pays

Elite equipment is meant to be hard to come by. The chance climbs with how far your run went, and no run is ever a certainty:

A full four-piece set is a long evening's work, and all six sets is a project — which is the point of a tier sitting above Barrows (I).

Elite Barrows equipment

Six full sets — 24 pieces, one set per brother, and every one of them sits about 25% above its Barrows (I) counterpart — a quarter more attack, a quarter more defence, a quarter more strength, +1 prayer on every piece, and a little more magic damage on the casting pieces.
New

Nothing was made worse to pay for it. Attack speeds are identical to the (I) weapons, and the penalties the sets already carried are untouched, so every elite piece is a straight upgrade with no trade-off to weigh up.

  • The same shapes you know. Ahrim's hood, robetop, robeskirt and staff; Dharok's helm, platebody, platelegs and greataxe; and so on through Guthan, Karil, Torag and Verac.
  • Every weapon keeps its own feel — the spear, the crossbow, the greataxe and the hammers all swing exactly as their originals do, just harder.
  • They cannot be noted. As with the (I) sets before them, noting a custom Barrows piece would quietly have turned it back into an ordinary one.

Every set has a spirit

Wear a full four-piece elite set and the brother it belonged to starts paying you tribute. Five of them drop something into your bank; Guthan's works in the fight itself.

The spirit of Elite Torag's has graced your bank with a gift.
  • It goes to your bank, not your bag. You will usually be wearing one of these mid-fight with a full inventory, and a gift that lands on the floor is not a gift.
  • You have to be playing. The clock only runs while you are genuinely active — ten minutes of standing still earns nothing, and the AFK zone does not count. It is the same "active" the attendance reward uses.
  • It's the full set or nothing. Three pieces and a different weapon earns you nothing at all.
  • Take the set off and the clock resets. You cannot bank nine minutes, swap to something else for an hour, and put it back on for an instant payout. Logging out resets it too.
  • A full bank costs you that one. You get told, and the next one is ten minutes after you make room.

Under the hood

Under the hood
  • Two new maps. The elite hill and the elite crypt each got their own slice of the world, far apart, on ground nothing else uses — checked against every region in the cache and every custom map already built.
  • The two Barrows had to be prised apart deliberately. The elite crypt was built from the same pieces as the original — the same coffins, chest and staircases. Left alone, the game could not tell them apart, and clicking something in the elite crypt would have run normal Barrows and credited the wrong kill count.
  • The gates were read off the map, not guessed at. Decoding the crypt turned up 56 gate leaves in twelve groups — eight walls between neighbouring chambers and four more around the chest. Opening a chamber's gates by distance alone would have swept up the chest's gates too, and two of the brother chambers sit right next to the middle — so clearing either would have unsealed the reward room and made the whole search pointless. Gates are now matched to the exact wall they stand on.
  • A chamber's own gates reach further than they look — eighteen tiles from the middle of the room, because the leaves run the full length of the wall. An earlier version looked only ten tiles out and left half of every chamber sealed after its brother had died.
  • The unlock reads your real kill counts. There is a per-run counter inside Barrows that resets every time a chest is looted — gating on that one would have sealed Elite Barrows shut forever.
  • The elite brothers are their own monsters. They had to be: the unlock is measured in normal brother kills, so if an elite kill counted toward it, the crypt would have unlocked itself from the inside.
  • The key is rolled outside the drop tables on purpose. Drop rate bonuses work by handing you extra passes over a monster's table, so a key sitting in one would quietly have become far commoner for anyone carrying a bonus. Rolling it on the kill itself is what makes 1 in 18 mean 1 in 18.
  • Landing spots are checked as they're used. Rather than trusting coordinates written down once, the game tests the ground at the moment it moves you and picks a clear tile nearby if the intended one is obstructed.
